Heretic Traveler I don’t carry a camera, I refuse to remember it, take only what won’t be left behind. On this side of the lens, I travel uncomposed, unconcerned with what angle recreates the snapshot as foreign to the experience as the place, more diminished by the eye once removed than by the limits of my aperture. I return without the journal I refuse to keep, the words I refuse to find that fall away like these drifting flecks of sunburned skin peeled away to the fresh flesh of the thing. "peeled away to the fresh flesh of the thing" ooh what an image! If I may recommend that you reconsider the fresh flesh combination. as a person who regularly carries my camera and notebook with me, I found this poem to be very enlightening. the one place I stumbled was the transition between the words and the flecks of skin. I cannot figure out why I stumbled, but figured I would bring it to you anyway. "...the words I refuse to find that fall away like these drifting flecks..." nice to read you, hope to read more in the future, jennifer |

Howdy Pen... I completely dig this poem of yours. It so reminds me of my retort to "a picture is worth a thousand words"... that being 'but a thousand words can start a war or end one, it can win a heart or easily break one." I don't do cameras either. I also carry a journalette that I'm not afraid to leave behind. Someone who sets words free must truly love them. ;) Love the ending! Cary... |

Loved everything about this one, Penelope, from the title on down. A poem filled with "nots" -- I truly relate to this perspective. And this: "flecks of sunburned skin peeled away to the fresh flesh of the thing." What marvelous use of sound! Nice work with the "f's." |

Jennifer, thanks for your thoughtful comments. Karen and Gary, smiles back to you. Glad you enjoyed this. Cary, good to hear from you. I understand what you mean. I keep reminding myself that pictures and poetry, as wonderful as they are, come second to the experience and always, always limit it in some way. M, I'm so pleased you appreciated this one. It's good to hear. Thank you, thank you.
